How Important Are Tortillas?

When you think about Mexican food a lot of things may come to mind; such as burritos, tacos, chimichangas and many more. One thing you might not really consider is the fact that almost everything that comes to your mind when thinking about Mexican food will have a tortilla associated with it. Whether that tortilla be fried and made into chips, or whether it’s stuffed with meat, beans and cheese. Tortillas are essential to Mexican cuisine. According to Gustavo Arellano in Taco USA, “…with no tortilla, there is no Mexico. There is nothing.”(pg 197)

When doing a search on for tortillas, there are a lot of recipes that come up on how to make your own homemade tortilla, there’s also the typical Wikipedia page that tells you everything you could possibly need to know about whatever you’re searching, and the 8th article that came up on the search was an article from the restaurant Chipotle. In this article Chipotle decides to tell a story about their tortillas using a cartoon tortilla that has arms, legs and a smile. You know tortillas have to be important if Chipotle decides to dedicate a section of their website on how their tortillas come about. Not to mention the fact that you wouldn’t be able to make a beautiful Chipotle burrito without a lovely tortilla.

  1. Cool design on their tortilla comic. I like it. There are recipes with flour tortillas that are pretty easy, but you would need a griddle pan to cook them I think. I haven’t made any for years, that’s inspiring me to get back. Fresh flour tortillas are a beautiful thing. They make the serious difference with some recipes. Corn tortillas, now that’s another matter. I’ve never tried to make those, but they are the basis for a lot more recipes.
